A Little Black Kitten

What do you think of when you hear someone press on their breaks and come to a dead stop in the middle of the street? Do you brace yourself waiting for the sound of impact?  Do you think they just stopped an accident from occurring due to quick reflexes? All I know is I held my breath and my body tensed right up.  Subconsciously I was probably bracing for an impact sound.  I was sitting at my desk at work and looked out the window to see this maroon truck stopped, still rocking from the sudden halt.  There wasn't any traffic but it was in the middle of the road. Idling. The vehicle backs up and parks and an older gentleman gets out and slowly walks down the middle of the road.  And then I heard it.  A meow.  Oh no.

I instantly grab the work keys and bolt out the front door thinking a cat is injured, but instead I find this teeny tiny black kitten trying to look as big as it can and meow hissing at this very tall lanky older man.  I ask him if he needs assistance and I walk over to the kitten who now turns its attention to me and gives me a fierce meow.  I placed one hand low in front of it while I scooped down and grabbed it by the scruff of the back of its neck like a mama cat would.  The older man, and now I feel badly I never did get his name, stated that he saw the mother cat run with one of the kittens in its mouth to the treed area across the street.  I proceeded to carry it to the exact location he pointed to placing the cat a good ways into the grass, and tapped its bottom forward and told it to go find mama.  A woman in a vehicle coming from the opposite direction saw the entire thing, rolled down her window and asked if there was a mom cat around to which I repeated what the older man had stated.  She thanked us both for stopping stating that not many people would stop.  I shook the mans hand and thanked him for stopping and wished him a great day.  Walking up the steps back into work I felt revitalized and almost giddy to have been part of saving the frightened kitten back to safety, and hopefully back to mama and its sibling.  She's right you know.  Not many people would stop to help.  How often do we see a situation and not stop.  Not offer to help.  Head down we keep on going.  We have places to be.  Things to do.

I cannot imagine how the kitten was feeling finding itself in possibly unfamiliar territory never seeing a street before, but I can guess.  It was frozen in fear.  Have you ever been there?  Found yourself in a situation you weren't sure how you got there and now you are stuck.  Frozen.  Fearful.  Not sure what to do next.  So maybe you act in a way you wouldn't normally act because you are trying to not show how unsure of yourself you really are, or how scared you are.  Got to keep it together.  Fake it until you make it. And maybe someone comes along and though they are acting friendly and genuinely, seemingly want to help, but you are not entirely sure of their motives because you have trust issues. We act according to past experiences, and, if you don't have any experience to draw upon, like this little kitten, your fight or flight instincts kick in.  Like this little kitten it had to show these tall mammals approaching that we shouldn't mess with it, but just like our Heavenly Father, He knows what we need before we do, and rescues us just in time.  The little kitten didn't know it was going to need saving.  But God did.  And he made sure there were two people ready, willing and able to be His hands.  I am sure right now it is with its family.  At the very least the little kitten is safe from being hit by a vehicle.

I can relate to this little kitten.  I can get overwhelmed easily but I am continuing to learn how to self soothe and calm myself.  It takes practice though.  I have to talk to myself sometimes.  Out loud even.  And when I find myself in a situation I am not entirely sure of what to do and feel like I am going to lose it, like this little kitten I need to meow lol.  Well, maybe not meow exactly, but call out because someone will hear me...and help. If I don't have the strength to do it audibly, then I will text from my bed. Or wherever I am.  I will breathe.  Literally (inhale for 5, hold for 4, exhale for 3).  When you are in fight or flight, you are unable to think rationally or calmly.  Trust me.  This is where the acting bigger than your situation comes into play and you act in a way that is not the way you truly want to act. And if you do act in a way you are not proud of, those that love you unconditionally, will scoop down and bring you to safety.

God's word promises "I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!" - Isaiah 65:24  Is there someone you need to call or visit or send a text message to?  They haven't been themselves lately or been around or been too quiet.  If God laid someone on your mind or heart to reach out to, please do it.  You might be their saving grace today. And we all need saving.
